In England the first 8 episodes of this, the second season, were shown on the BBC in the ’80s, the remaining 11 episodes being relegated to an afternoon timeslot, which was a shame because the episodes – many of which were written by John Jay Osborne Jr, the creator of the original source novel – were great television. It was later shown on Satellite channel Sky 1, but edited in order to fit ads in. Another shame.

I only hope that if seasons 3 and 4 are released by Shout Factory (soon, please!) they will be in a combined 2-season box, because season 3 consisted of only 12 episodes and season 4 only 6. There are 19 season 2 episodes here, however.
This show really is something special. I’ve been quoting it as my all-time favourite series for years… but so few people seem to remember it outside of the US.

If ever there was a documentary about the Bermuda triangle,this would be it!From the beginning this documentary sets the tone for the rest of the hour plus.From the earliest reports of missing ships of old to missing planes of the present,this one covers it all.I must say I have a bias to this dvd as it really covered in depth the disappearance of flight 19.Every possible theory is covered and explained to great detail.The viewer will be able to follow it through to the end.I would highly recommended this dvd to anyone wanting to begin their exploration of all things un-explainable,hope that made sense!).
I found this documentary extremely informative giving a variety of perspectives on the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon. I had read some of the books on the subject referred to in the DVD and appreciated the opportunity to see all data and current conjecture presented. I would recommend this DVD to anyone interested in exploring the issue.

This excellent film is probably best described as subtle elegance. Framed in the present, the movie deals with the lives inside an English country home just prior to World War II. Reunited with the filmmakers from Howards End are Emma Thompson as Miss Kenton, the head housekeeper, and Anthony Hopkins as Stevens, the impeccable butler. The bittersweet story centers on Stevens and his dedication to his master, Lord Darlington (a suitably officious and slyly pompous James Fox). Stevens summarizes: “I don’t believe a man can consider himself fully content until he has done all he can to be of service to his employer.” Enveloping Stevens’s world are the pending war with Germany, Darlington’s horribly misguided interests in said war, and, most effectively, his relationship with Miss Kenton. Stevens is the very essence of repression, but as played by Hopkins he is neither piteous nor self-righteous. Like his master, Stevens becomes misguided in his loyalties, although his is an emotional deprivation, possibly condemning him to lifelong regret. There’s so much going on in this film, and yet the action is skillfully depicted through understanding and knowing glances, through emotions expressed only through eye contact. Like other Merchant-Ivory-Ruth Prawer Jhabvala collaborations, this film is sumptuous to look at, capturing the period effectively and affectingly. Jhabvala respectfully adapts from the Kazuo Ishiguro novel. Excellent in supporting roles are Christopher Reeve, Ben Chaplin, and Hugh Grant. –N.F. Mendoza

It seems strange to even attempt a silent version of a Shakespeare play, but they frequntly were made throughout the 1910s. This filming of King Lear had the advantage of starring Frederick Warde, who had played King Lear many times on stage. Warde also made an effort to act for the camera, and give some meaning to his gesticulations. This cinematic classic from 1916 has been lovingly restored and features an all-new soundtrack.
